Congratulations to our former webmaster, Philip Asher (photograph top right), on his recent marriage to Abi. The wedding ceremony was particularly noted for the choice of music - the bride entered to a motet by Gerald Finzi, and the happy couple left the church to the strains of "Transports de joie" from Messiaen's suite L'Ascension! A half-hour recital by Tom Bell preceded the marriage service, there were well-chosen hymns, and a selection of anthems and motets were sung during the signing of the registers.
Philip and Abi have moved to live in Cambridgeshire, and we wish them every happiness in their new life together.
Our first meeting of the 2008-2009 Season took place at St Paul's Church, Heaton Moor, on Saturday 27th September. Ken Fayle, Jack Longstaff, Simon Mercer, Edward McHale, and the President, David Sanders, played a widely varied programme including music by Bach, Brewer, Handel, Liszt, Parry, Mozart and a very recent piece by the Cumbrian composer, Stephen Robinson.
See the Syllabus page for the rest of this Season's events.
I have been notified of the following local events:
Salford University
Due to damage to the organ of the Maxwell Hall, the Lunchtime recital series sponsored by the University of Salford will for the time take place at St Philip's Church, off Chapel Street, Salford, noted for its Samuel Renn organ of 1829. The resident organist, Jonathan Scott, will give the next recital in the series on Monday 27th October at 1.00 p.m.
St Peter's Church, Harper's Lane, Chorley
Looking further into the future, on Friday 14th November, there will be a recital by Graham Barber (Professor of Organ at the University of Leeds) on the organ of St Peter's Chorley.
Admission £5.00 (concessions £3.50)
Bury Parish Church (St.Mary the Virgin)
The organ originally built by Frederick W. Jardine which was rebuilt and modified several times during the twentieth century, has now been completely rebuilt by Nicholson Organs of Malvern.
Now that other refurbishments to the church are also complete, a grand re-opening recital by Gordon Stewart has been arranged for Saturday 15th November at 7.30 p.m.
